Ardavan Akhavan M.D.

Assistant Professor of Urology

Dr. Ardavan Akhavan is the Interim Chief of the Division of Pediatric Urology and Vice Chair of Quality and Patient Safety in the Department of Urology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine. He is a nationally recognized Pediatric Urologist with extensive experience in both robotic and open surgery for pediatric conditions affecting the kidneys, ureters, bladder and genitalia.

Having performed hundreds of robotic procedures in children and infants as young as eight weeks of age, Dr. Akhavan has particular expertise in robotic surgery for treatment of vesicoureteral reflux and ureteropelvic junction obstruction. He is also among a small group of surgeons nationwide with extensive experience in complex robotic reconstruction to treat children and adolescents with incontinence due to neurogenic bladder from spinal cord injury or spina bifida.  As a founding member of the Pediatric Urology Robotic Surgery Consortium, Dr. Akhavan collaborates with other leading pediatric robotic surgeons to evaluate, publish and ultimately improve outcomes in pediatric robotic surgery.

Dr. Akhavan also specializes in the treatment of severe proximal hypospadias, a condition characterized by an abnormally positioned urethral opening, often associated with penile curvature. He frequently employs advanced techniques such as staged STAC repair with foreskin or buccal grafting, as well as adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and is widely sought for complex revision surgeries following unsuccessful repairs performed elsewhere.

Dr. Akhavan graduated magna cum laude from Columbia University and earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed both General Surgery and Urology residency trainings at Mount Sinai Medical Center and a two‑year fellowship in Pediatric Urology at Seattle Children’s Hospital, where he served as Instructor. Before joining NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. Akhavan served as faculty at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, where he developed and directed the Pediatric Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program and co‑directed the Fetal Surgery and Pediatric Kidney Stone Programs.

Dr. Akhavan is committed to delivering the highest level of pediatric urology care, offering advanced treatment options and personalized support for children and families across New York and beyond.
