Annual Events

Victor F. Marshall Visiting Professorship

The Victor F. Marshall Visiting Professorship is an annual meeting for current faculty, residents and alumni of the Department of Urology, as well as urologists practicing in the New York Metropolitan area. The Marshall was originated in 1979 by faculty members and residents to honor a distinguished colleague each year. It presents an opportunity to demonstrate and discuss recent urological advances from world-renowned physicians.

Dr. Victor Marshall came to The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical College from Culpepper, Virginia by way of Washington and Lee University and the University of Virginia Medical School. Dr. Marshall did his surgical and urologic training at The New York Hospital and in 1946 joined its urologic staff. In 1948, Dr. Marshall became Surgeon-in-Chief (Urology) at The New York Hospital, a position he held until 1976. He developed the residency into one of the most outstanding urologic training programs in the world. Its graduates have gone on to fill many academic chairs in national and international urology, as well as to render superb urologic care to their communities.

Dr. Marshall was a prolific author with more than two hundred publications to his credit. In addition to this, Dr. Marshall was an active member of many urologic societies, including the American Board of Urology, of which he was President. He received the Ramon Guiteras Medal of the American Urological Association, the Barringer Medal of the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons and the Valentine Award of the New York Academy of Medicine.

We honor Dr. Marshall by joining together our distinguished visiting professor and the past and current faculty and residents of the Department of Urology to demonstrate and discuss surgical and diagnostic techniques in a collegial atmosphere.

Russell W. Lavengood Visiting Professorship

The Russell Lavengood Visiting Professorship is an annual meeting for current faculty, residents and alumni of the Department of Urology, as well as urologists practicing in the New York Metropolitan area. The Lavengood was originated in 1988 by faculty members and residents to honor distinguished colleague and leader Dr. Russell W. Lavengood. The Lavengood presents an opportunity to demonstrate and discuss current pediatric surgical and diagnostic techniques in pediatric urology.

The Russell W. Lavengood Visiting Professorship was established in 1988 to honor our distinguished colleague and leader, Dr. Russell W. Lavengood. Initially supported through the generosity of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Foundation, ongoing support for this Professorship is now provided by an anonymous donor.

Dr. Russell W. Lavengood came to The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical College from Lexington, Kentucky by way of St. Joseph's College and University of Louisville Medical School. Dr. Lavengood did his surgical and urologic training at Bellevue Hospital. For more than 35 years, Dr. Lavengood positively influenced this institution through his work here and at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospitals. While his scientific achievements in the medical and surgical treatment of stone disease are significant, Dr. Lavengood is best remembered for the kind and generous manner in which he treated his colleagues, his residents, and most importantly, his patients.

Dr. Lavengood contributed to the medical center in numerous ways, culminating with his election to the Board of Overseers of Cornell University Medical College in 1984. Nevertheless, the span of Dr. Lavengood's influence went far beyond the walls of this institution. He was an active member of numerous medical societies, including a past President of the New York section of the American Urological Association and of the American Association of Clinical Urologists, a trustee of the American Board of Urology and a Governor of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Lavengood lived only long enough to attend the first Lavengood Professorship, but we continue to honor him through this annual event. Each spring, a distinguished visiting professor is joined by current faculty and residents, as well as physicians from the New York Metropolitan area, to discuss current surgical and diagnostic techniques in pediatric urology.
